Stores must use consistent units when displaying unit prices within product categories

by NormiaJanuary 2, 2026

When stores display unit prices, all products in the same category must use the same unit of measurement.

The Problem:

Walk into any supermarket and try to compare coffee prices. One bag shows $2.50/100g, another shows $18/kg, and a third shows $8.99/unit. You need a calculator to figure out which is actually cheaper. This wastes everyone's time and makes informed purchasing nearly impossible.

The Standard:

  • All products within a category must display unit prices using the same denominator
  • Coffee: all per 100g. Drinks: all per litre. Cleaning products: all per 100ml
  • Stores must choose the most practical unit for each category and apply it consistently
  • Why This Matters:

This isn't about restricting business—it's about respecting consumers' time. The information is already there; it just needs to be comparable. No one benefits from deliberate confusion except those hoping you won't notice you're overpaying.
