Apps using infinite scroll must display session time and offer natural stopping points

by NormiaJanuary 2, 2026

Applications that use infinite scroll must show users how long they've been scrolling and provide clear moments to stop.

The Problem:

Infinite scroll is designed to eliminate natural stopping points. There's no "end of page" to prompt reflection. Hours disappear into feeds engineered to prevent you from putting your phone down. The design is intentionally addictive.

The Standard:

  • Apps using infinite scroll must display a visible session timer showing continuous usage
  • Every 10-15 minutes of scrolling, offer a natural break point ("You've been scrolling for 15 minutes")
  • The pause must require active dismissal, not auto-disappear after 2 seconds
  • Why This Matters:

This isn't about banning features people enjoy—it's about informed consent. You should know how much of your finite life you're spending on an app. The current design deliberately hides this information because the truth would change behavior.
