If you can create an account online, you must be able to delete it online

by NormiaJanuary 2, 2026

Any service that allows online account creation must provide an equally accessible online account deletion process.

The Problem:

Sign up in 30 seconds. Try to leave? Please call this number (only available 9-5 EST), wait on hold for 45 minutes, speak to a "retention specialist" who will try to talk you out of it, then wait 30 days while we "process" your request. This asymmetry is deliberate and disrespectful.

The Standard:

  • Account deletion must be available through the same channel as account creation
  • The process must be completable in comparable time and effort
  • No requiring phone calls, postal mail, or in-person visits for accounts created digitally
  • Deletion must be actual deletion, not just "deactivation"
  • Why This Matters:

Your right to leave a service is as fundamental as your right to join it. Dark patterns that trap users aren't clever business—they're hostage-taking. If a service is good, people will stay. If it needs to trap people, it doesn't deserve them.
