Canceling a subscription must be as easy as signing up

by NormiaJanuary 19, 2026

The Problem

87% of major brands use guilt-inducing copy and dark patterns to discourage cancellation. The average user encounters 6+ manipulation tactics and needs 7 clicks just to cancel. Companies make signing up a one-click process but canceling a labyrinth of phone calls, retention agents, and hidden options.

The Standard

Any service you can subscribe to online must offer an equally simple online cancellation process - same number of clicks, no phone calls required, no retention agents, no guilt trips.

Where It Exists

The FTC finalized a "Click to Cancel" rule in 2024. California, Illinois, and New York have enacted similar state laws. The EU has also moved in this direction. Amazon paid $2.5B to settle claims over their deliberately confusing cancellation flow.
