You must be able to export all your data from any platform

by NormiaJanuary 19, 2026

The Problem

Users are locked into platforms because all their photos, messages, playlists, or documents are trapped there. Switching services means losing years of content. Many platforms make data export impossible, incomplete, or deliberately difficult.

The Standard

Users must be able to export all their personal data in a structured, machine-readable format (JSON, CSV) and, where technically feasible, have it transferred directly to a competing service. Export must be available within 30 days and free of charge.

Where It Exists

GDPR Article 20 establishes the right to data portability in the EU. The Digital Markets Act strengthens requirements for Big Tech "gatekeepers." California's CCPA provides similar rights. Utah requires social media data portability starting July 2026.
