AI decisions affecting your life must be explainable by a human
The Problem
People are being rejected for jobs, loans, apartments, and benefits by algorithms with no explanation. Resume scanners filter out qualified candidates. Credit scores are determined by opaque AI systems. There's no way to understand why you were denied or how to appeal.
The Standard
When AI systems make decisions that significantly affect individuals (employment, credit, benefits, housing), users must be informed they're subject to AI decision-making and have the right to request human review and explanation of the criteria used.
Where It Exists
The EU AI Act requires human oversight for AI used in recruitment, credit scoring, and public benefits (effective 2026). GDPR already grants the right to human review for automated decisions. California's CCPA regulations on automated decision-making take effect in 2026.
