Smartphones must receive 5 years of software updates
The Problem
Perfectly functional 2-year-old phones become "unsupported" security risks. Manufacturers stop providing updates to push consumers toward new purchases. The Windows 10 end-of-support could generate 700+ million kg of e-waste from working computers.
The Standard
Smartphone and tablet manufacturers must provide operating system and security updates for a minimum of 5 years from date of sale. Software updates cannot intentionally degrade device performance without user consent.
Where It Exists
The EU Ecodesign Regulation mandates 5 years of software updates for smartphones and tablets (effective June 2025). France treats planned obsolescence as a criminal offense with up to 2 years imprisonment.
