Beverage containers should have deposit return schemes
The Problem
Billions of bottles and cans end up in landfills, oceans, and streets every year. Voluntary recycling achieves only 30-50% recovery rates. Without financial incentive, most containers are thrown away rather than recycled.
The Standard
All beverage containers (plastic bottles, aluminum cans, glass bottles) should carry a refundable deposit of at least €0.25 / $0.25. All retailers must accept returns. Target: 90%+ separate collection rate.
Where It Exists
Germany achieves 98% return rate - the world's highest - with their €0.25 deposit system. Sweden prevented 180,000 tons of CO2 in 2024 through their scheme. The EU mandates 90% separate collection by 2029.
