The standard work week should be 37 hours maximum

by NormiaJanuary 19, 2026

The Problem

The 40-hour work week was designed for factory labor over a century ago. Knowledge work doesn't scale linearly with hours - after a point, more hours means less productivity. Overwork leads to burnout, health problems, and worse output.

The Standard

The standard full-time work week should be capped at 37 hours maximum. Studies show productivity doesn't decrease - and often improves - with fewer hours.

Where It Exists

Nordic countries average 37-hour work weeks. Iceland trialed reduced hours with 2,500 workers (2015-2019) and found worker wellbeing "increased tremendously" with no productivity loss. These aren't company perks - they're legal standards.
